Hand-block printing

Rajasthan

Hand-block printing

A carved wooden block is dipped in colour and pressed onto the cloth. The printer repeats the impression to build the pattern. Look closely at Gulnaar’s flowers: small changes in colour and placement are part of block printing by hand.

Chikankari hand embroidery

Lucknow

Chikankari hand embroidery

Chikankari is a hand embroidery tradition from Lucknow, India. Artisans use a needle and thread to stitch delicate flowers and vines into the cloth. On Noor Bagh, fine stitches form vines and flowers across the raw silk. The ivory and gold-toned threads make the needlework easy to see against the beige fabric.

Raised hand embroidery

Decorative hand embroidery

Raised hand embroidery

Zardozi is a hand embroidery technique with ornate, raised stitching. Desert Pearl pairs this detailing with raw silk and a tasselled drawstring. The same technique appears on several of our statement bags and children’s occasion sets.
